About the artist

Born in 1973, Juliette Agnel lives and works in Paris. After completing two degrees at the University of Paris 1 (arts in 1995 and ethno-aesthetics in 1997), she continued her studies at the Paris “Beaux-Arts” (National School of Fine Arts), from which she graduated with honours in 2000.

Her encounter with Jean Rouch led her to spend more than ten years on the roads of Africa, from 1995. It was during her first trip that she stopped painting and started using photography and film as media.

In 2003, she took part in the adventure of la Génerale, in the Belleville area of Paris, and the development of its photographic laboratory. She then travelled to Korea, where she exhibited her photographs and shot a series of view-camera and Polaroid portraits of women in her husband’s family.

With her digital “camera obscura”, invented and produced in 2011 to film “pinhole time” at the Maison du Geste et de l’Image (writing with light residency, DRAC Ile de France), she produced several series in photography and video (see vimeo/julietteagniel), including the Éblouis performance which she staged on multiple occasions, among which “Photo OFF” at La Bellevilloise in 2012 with Lydie Trigano.

In 2012 and 2013, she was presented by Galerie Françoise Paviot for the night openings during the FIAC art fair. Her work was exhibited at the Isabelle Gounod gallery (curated by Leah Bismuth) in the “Nouvelle vague dans tout Paris” exhibition; she obtained a residency in Norway, some of the images of which were shown in the Espace des Blancs Manteaux, one of the FIAC’s alternative venues in 2013.
